Middle Fork of The Salmon River – Day 5

Karie had recommended walking back up the trail toward the Flying B Ranch. She and Whitney had walked it yesterday when we stopped for ice cream. It was a beautiful view from the top of the hill, and a nice morning for a walk. Back in camp, the boys were cooking biscuits and gravy, hash browns and eggs.

I think we were on the river by 8:30. With Tristan on the oars, I was in the back with Todd. I let him do the fishing while I took pictures. I learned he is a Cowboy Action Shooting champion, winning the West Virginia state championship for the last three years. That’s different from Quick Draw, and he also does another division where you shoot a pistol, a rifle, known as 3-gun. He travels all around competing in these contests. His eyes are good, as he was always the first to spot game.

We stopped at Rattlesnake Cave to check out pictographs, or ancient paintings on stone. We have seen some petroglyphs, where images were carved in stone. Thankfully, we didn’t see any rattlesnakes. A while later, we hiked up to Veil Falls, a very high fall that you could stand under and take a shower. In the cave above, there are more pictographs if you climb up a ledge, and if you are young and brave, you can walk out this ledge to an incredible view of the river.

It wasn’t long before there was another waterfall. What a day! And then the best Prime Rib ever, cooked in the dutch oven.
